Safari Introduction

GUIDES: Kyle de Nobrega and Ruth Nussbaum

There are few places in Africa that can be describes as being “Raw wilderness”.  From the moment you touch down in Mana Pools you sense that something about the area is different. Perhaps it is the open floodplains with massive trees dotted amongst them, or perhaps it is the elephants rambling amongst them, sometimes lifting high on their hind legs to reach the branches. Perhaps it is the campsite, situated on the banks of the Zambezi River with no one else about. Perhaps it is the elephants that come and feed in the tree above you as you are having your lunch. Whichever one of these it may be, Mana pools instantly touches something within you and makes you realise that you are in a different wilderness altogether.

The first realisation of the actual “raw” sensation comes when you head out on a drive and within minutes of sighting an animal you get out your vehicle and walk towards it. This brings a completely different sensation to your photography and your experience. Being within a few meters of a large elephant bull as it feeds quietly above you is one you will never forget. I have watched people put down their cameras to enjoy the experience of such a scene, humbled by being within their presence.

This photo workshop is in collaboration with Tailormade Safaris, a seasoned safari company who has many thousands of hours working in the reserve. Tailormade Safari’s guide has worked with C4 on many Mana pools safaris and each one was an indication of how excellent a naturalist they are and how well they knows the Mana Pools National Park. On this workshop we will have a Tailormade Safari’s guide who will be our walking guide in addition to your C4 Photo hosts.

The Ana Tree forests of Mana Pools are what set it aside as one of Africa's most beautiful landscapes

Most of the wildlife viewing and photography takes place on foot, allowing you endless oppurtunity

Day 1 - 6

The camp has a tent with charging station for charging batteries and power to process images on laptops. We will be staying in a tented camp on the banks of the Zambezi River, with hippos serenading us each night.  The tents have en suite bucket showers with warm water and freshly dug long drop toilets.

Zambezi river camp

The idea of the Tented Adventures is to go back in time and try and enjoy the wild and remote areas of Africa the way it was done in a bygone era, with only basic comfort and in an effort to come close to Nature herself.

By only catering for one party at a time that is guided by a qualified and experienced professional guide we create a tailor-made, exclusive, memorable journey enjoyed from a vehicle, from a canoe or on foot. Accommodation consists of large Meru tents with en-suite shower and toilet and the camp consists of an outside dining area as well as fireplace. We strive to heighten this adventure by combining great, adventurous yet safe guiding, unique flexibility to guest interests and requests with a comfortable bed, good food in a camp with vantage locations Tailor-made! Our tented safaris are fully backed up by a crew of 3-4 staff (depending on the area and number in party) who will take care of the movement, setup and breakdown of the camp, cooking, waiting and making up the tents ensuring that guests make the most of the day and the night with their safari commitments and rest. Paraffin lanterns light Camp at night but we have enough lighting and power for laptops and charging cameras.
