South Luangwa Lion Hunt

"WATCH OUT, THERE IS A PRIDE OF LIONS BEHIND YOU"

These where the soft words of wisdom that a guide from another camp told us on our very first morning in South Luangwa.

We had just started packing up after a celebratory coffe break in having tracked and found our first leopard and asI started my engine, we saw them. A pride of 3 lionesses walked towards where we had been sitting beside our car and settled in exactly the same spot.

A lagoon with water at this time of year in the luangwa valley is a lifeline, a place to drink and for the predator, a place for food. A nearby dappled shady combretum thicket aligning the lagoon was perfect ambush scenario. The 3 lionesses hid patiently as they watched in silence as a herd of zebra continued with their daily routine towards the water for a late morning drink. They had no idea!

What unfolded over that cracked mudplain infront of us, and the sound of a dying zebra echoing through the forest, will remain vivid in my mind for a VERY long time...

We want to share the magic that the 'valley of the leopard' holds with you, join us here in 2017 to the legendary Kaingo camp, a safari that you have been waiting for!

The sound that followed resonating within the forest was daunting, we couldnt see whether the zebra mother or the foal had been killed. We followed up that same afternoon, and one by one, atleast 4 large crocodiles slid out of the forest with full bellies. Perhaps it was the mother, and the commotion stirred the crocodiles from their slumber, fighting against another apex predator to claim the carcass? I guess we will never know!
